Financial Evaluantion of the Impact of the Greening on Orange Production

Abstract

The state of São Paulo is the biggest orange producer in Brazil, contributing to the country being the largest exporter of orange juice. The state's high productivity supplies the juice industries, ensuring that Brazil leads in the international market. However, the advancement of Greening (Huanglongbing) has concerned citrus growers, as it is becoming increasingly difficult to control the spread of the disease, especially in their municipalities. Researchers have been studying densification methods to minimize losses, increasing the number of trees and consequently the volume of harvested fruits. The search for new methods to mitigate the impact of the orange harvest reduction is directly linked to exports, potentially negatively influencing the PIB (Produto Interno Bruto). Analyzing the costs imposed by the disease on the productive system can make decisions more accurate and assertive. Through exploratory research, it was possible to gather data to calculate the necessary expenses to minimize the damages caused by HLB and conduct a statewide survey of annual costs and during the productive life of the trees.
