Impact of Implementing an Electronic Information System on Reducing Paper Consumption in a Public Educational Institution

This article aims to analyze the reduction in paper consumption at a free higher education institution following the implementation of the Electronic Information System (SEI). Over its 55 years of operation, the education network accumulated a significant number of physical documents, resulting in access and storage issues. Aiming for greater clarity, efficiency, and sustainability, the gradual replacement of physical processes with virtual ones was promoted. In this context, a descriptive-exploratory approach was adopted, gathering quantitative and qualitative data for the periods of 2019 and 2023. This analysis showed a considerable decrease in the use of reams of paper, with a reduction of 6.35% in consumption. It is observed that digitalization contributed not only to a more organized and safer working environment regarding document management but also to greater productivity. Additionally, it is estimated that approximately 197.5 trees were saved along with a reduction in water usage. Thus, the study highlights the efficiency of using technologies like SEI and the importance of this tool for sustainability.
